Ensemble Matisse
Formed in 2010, Ensemble Matisse has established itself on the London contemporary music scene as the leader in a new generation of creative artists championing new music. The ensemble is recognised for the vibrancy and precision it brings to all its performances and for the innovative and imaginative nature of its programming.
Ensemble Matisse, a collective of experiences and passionate chamber musicians, takes the form of a flexible entity that can morph into any combination from solo to quartet to large ensemble and who embrace collaborative work with electronic performers, dancers, theatre makers, visual artists, narrators, animators etc.
Alongside a special interest in promoting the music of emerging composers, Ensemble Matisse is known for its versatility. Performing works from the Renaissance through to music of the present day the Ensemble's programming is not inhibited by convention. The musicians are just as comfortable improvising live in concert as they are when performing the core chamber music repertoire and they prioritise direct and honest communication with their audience, breaking down the barrier between the performer and the listener.
The Ensemble has already given numerous high profile performances including at Colston Hall Bristol, Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Kings Place London and for Radio 3 from the BBC Proms in a composer portrait of Kevin Volans. The Ensemble loves to take its music out of the concert hall to a different audience and, with this in mind, performs in unusual settings such as club nights for NonClassical label and the Macbeth in Hoxton. Ensemble Matisse have been selected for the prestigious Park Lane Group Young Artists for 2014 and are supported by the Arts Council England for their latest commission project 'Extinct Birds' from composer David Holyoake
